The first of STEYR's unique design systems is the “Monoblock” where the engine block and cylinder head are manufactured into one piece. The cast iron alloy “Monoblock” ensures even temperature and cooling. The advantage is that the usual problems identified with diesel engines such as blown head gaskets are eliminated.
This “Monoblock” system has also allowed the weight of the engine to be significantly reduced. Remarkably, the STEYR 236(212Hp) weighs only 305kg making these engines the lightest on the market.
The second system is a patented 2 stage camshaft actuated direct injection which eliminates black smoke, diesel knock and ensures a smooth and quiet ride.
The first stage of the unit injection starts a fuel burn whilst the second stage delivers the required amount of fuel for that stroke. As combustion has already taken place when the main fuel quantity has been delivered, the ignition is soft and the burn is clean.
These unique designs guarantee a diesel engine intended to withstand the harsh marine environment and continuous loading experiences in marine applications.
