Traditionally, in order to comply with emission standards, automotive engines have used EGR (Exhaust Gas Recycling) to reduce oxide of nitrogen emissions from exhaust gases. This process recirculates exhaust gases into the inlet manifold at light engine loads to reduce combustion temperatures.

In stark contrast, STEYR Motors Engines are able to reduce oxide of nitrogen emission levels by 40% without the use of EGR.
